Kinematix Sense SA (formerly known as Tomorrow Options – Microelectronics, SA) changed its name to better reflect the company’s dedication to monitoring body dynamics during real-life activities.
Kinematix is a start-up of FEUP – Faculty of Engineering of University of Porto and INESC Porto – Institute for Engineering Systems and Computers, and was established in March 2007, in Porto (Portugal), to design and manufacture innovative electronic devices for the health, sports and industrial markets. The company develops its products based on detection of unmet needs and the development of differentiated and innovative solutions through internal R&D or key partnerships that can boost the company capabilities. On January 2009, Kinematix has established a subsidiary in United Kingdom, Sheffield, as UK was defined the best market to begin the commercialisation of Kinematix technologies and it was an optimal platform allowing the company to explore globally its products and satisfying the international ambitions of the shareholders and the team. The company has already developed and launched in the international markets two products: one to monitor lower limbs, with applications in several medical fields: podiatry, orthopaedics, neurology, cardiology, etc.; and the other to monitor the position and rest time on each position of bedridden patients, with the aim of preventing pressure ulcers. Both products are small, light-weight, wireless, easy-to-use and have a good battery autonomy to allow an efficient, comfortable and simple monitoring of patients, providing useful and unique information to health care staff, increasing the quality of health outcomes.
Contributions to the project
has formal partnerships with several national and international R&D organisations such as Designfutures, from Sheffield Hallam University; University of Sheffield; University of Porto, INESC Porto. Kinematix products: 1) WALKiNSENSE – in the market since December 2009 – a small, portable and independent device that monitors and assesses lower limbs condition; it is the only device in the world that allows simultaneously two complementary analyses: dynamic in shoe plantar pressure and activity evaluation (body weight distribution on the foot sole during walking or running) and activity evaluation (distance walked, walking or running speed) and 2) MOViNSENSE – launched at the beginning of the year – a device to monitor patients’ position when sitting or lying, counting the time they stay in the same position, with the goal of preventing bedsores and pressure ulcers, promoting that someone changes their position within safe time intervals. Kinematix will contribute to this project with its know-how on monitoring people to monitor the daily physical activity of Mild Cognitive Impairment and Alzheimer disease patients, and giving inputs to the development of behavioural and lifestyle models.
